Audi PB 18 to preview new R8 e-tron?
An all-electric R8 has already been canceled twice, most recently in 2016.
Audi's PB 18 e-tron concept, due to be revealed later this month in Pebble Beach, has been viewed as a hint toward another all-electric R8.
The PB 18 show car will feature technology and design elements borrowed from the R18 e-tron hybrid endurance racer, which competes in the Le Mans Prototype (LMP) class.
An Automotive News report suggests the concept may be the first sign that Audi is finally bringing an all-electric R8 e-tron to full production or replacing the current V8- and V10-powered supercar.
The R8 e-tron has already been under development for many years, most recently entering limited production in 2016 but immediately discontinued before entering volume production.
Audi and sibling brand Porsche have competed for leadership of Volkswagen Group's electrified future. Porsche has already anchored its EV lineup around the Taycan, while Audi's efforts will initially focus on crossovers and eventually a four-door sports car.
