BMW working on X8 M45e performance hybrid?
A flagship X8 M is also rumored to be on the roadmap.
Rumors surrounding BMW's X8 have begun to swirl once again as reports point to an M Performance plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The company is expected to launch an X8 M45e, combining BMW's 3.0-liter inline six with one or more electric motors, slotting between the standard configurations and the rumored X8 M variant, according to BMW Blog.
If the report is accurate, the M45e designation suggests the hybrid setup will fall between the output specs of the X7 xDrive 40i, which delivers 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, and the X7 M50i with 523 horses and 553 pound-feet of twist.
BMW is likely eyeing the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe as a direct rival. The basic electrified Cayenne Coupe boasts 455 horsepower and can launch to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, with an $86,400 price tag.
Previous rumors have pointed to the M750Le as another upcoming M Performance hybrid, delivering a combined output of more than 550 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The X8 M45e is expected to arrive on the market first, however, as BMW attempts to expand the X8 lineup to accommodate big spenders in the ever-growing luxury crossover segment.
