Droptop BMW i8 confirmed
BMW\'s CEO confirms that it will go into production in 2018.
The BMW i8 roadster, first shown at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show in concept form, has been confirmed for production.
The news came at a press conference in Santa Monica, California last week, delivered by BMW CEO Harald Krueger, according to Automotive News. Krueger said that an open top i8 will begin production in 2018, but gave no other details.
Since showing it in Beijing, BMW has been ambiguous about its production date, only saying that it was on its way. When it hits the road, however, it will likely be based on a facelifted version of the i8 with more power thanks to a larger a lithium-ion battery pack and more powerful electric motor. Some reports estimate power to be at least 400 horsepower, up from the current 354.
At the same conference, Krueger also noted his satisfaction with the updated BMW i3, which has improved its range from 118 miles to 186.
