GM's Cruise teams with DoorDash for autonomous food delivery
The first pilot project will kick off in San Francisco in March.
General Motors' Cruise Automation unit has teamed with DoorDash to launch an autonomous food delivery pilot project.
The companies are exploring the technical and infrastructure challenges, impacts on customers and businesses, and gauging the service quality compared to human delivery services.
"To begin, we've built a runner system to move orders from the merchant to the autonomous vehicle," DoorDash special projects operations lead Penn Daniel wrote in a blog post. "Then, the customer will be notified when the autonomous vehicle is approaching the customer address."
The pilot project will initially be limited to San Francisco, with deliveries expected to begin in March.
