Chevrolet Camaro to go back on hiatus?

A report suggests that the sixth-gen Camaro may be the last to wear the badge in the near term.

The sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro may be the last car to bear the name for the foreseeable future, as the seventh-generation car has reportedly gone into development limbo.

According to Muscle Cars and Trucks, the seventh-generation Camaro program has been suspended with no plan to take the model beyond the 2023 model year, when the current Alpha platform (which also underpins the soon-to-be-discontinued Cadillac ATS sedan and coupe) will be retired.

The ATS will be replaced by the new CT4, which will utilize the next generation of the aforementioned Alpha platform. According to the report, there are no plans for the Camaro to make the same transition.

If the report is true (Thus far, GM has not confirmed it.), this would not be the first time the Camaro has gone on hiatus. A seven-year gap existed between the fourth- and fifth-generation Camaro, which was introduced just as GM was beginning to emerge from bankruptcy and bailout in the depths of the financial crisis.

The sixth-generation car, which has been a critical darling since its introduction, only successfully outsold the Ford Mustang for a brief period before falling back to second (and eventually third) place in sales in the hazily defined American muscle coupe segment.

At the end of the first quarter of this year (the last time GM reported sales figures), the Mustang and Dodge Challenger were both out-selling GM's pony car.
