Chevrolet gives us a taste of the new 2019 Silverado

by Ronan Glon

The truck\'s full reveal will take place at the Detroit Auto Show.

Chevrolet took us by surprise when it introduced the brand-new 2019 Silverado 1500 at a special event in Dallas, Texas. The brand used a Sikorsky S-61 helicopter to drop the truck onto the stage.

The tall, upright front end that has characterized the Silverado for decades evolves with sleeker headlights, a twin-slat grille, and C-shaped LED daytime running lights. Round wheel arches and sculpted sides make the 2019 truck look less slab-sided than the outgoing model. Out back, a stamped Chevrolet script takes up nearly the entire width of the tailgate.

The use of mixed materials helps reduce weight by a considerable amount, Chevrolet promises. The company notes it now makes the Silverado's bed floor with high-strength steel but it stops short of listing the other materials. Rumors claim aluminum -- a metal pioneered by rival Ford on the F-150 -- and carbon fiber will both be part of the blend.

The model air-lifted on stage is called Trailboss. It's an off-road-focused trim level that builds on the Z71 package with a two-inch suspension lift and, likely, an array of aesthetic modifications seen in the three photos released after the truck's debut. It's one of eight Silverado models Chevrolet is planning for 2019, but the brand won't tell us about the other seven for the time being.

There's no word on powertrain options, either. The line-up will include a turbodiesel, if recent spy shots are to be believed.

We'll have to wait until the 2018 Detroit Auto Show opens its doors next month to find out more about Chevrolet's newest truck. The next-gen Silverado will reach showrooms nationwide before the end of next year.
