Jeep Grand Commander heading to US market as a Chrysler model?

Separate rumors point to a Chrysler-badged crossover based on the Dodge Charger.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is reportedly planning to repurpose China's Jeep Grand Commander to help expand Chrysler's dwindling lineup in the US market.

Based on the Cherokee platform and stretched to fit a third seating row, the Grand Commander's on-road focus is said to be a better fit for Chrysler's brand at home.

The seven-seat Chrysler crossover is expected to be built in the US, perhaps at the Cherokee's Illinois assembly plant, according to Allpar.

The late FCA chief Sergio Marchionne earlier this year indicated that the company had backpedaled on plans to utilize Alfa Romeo's Giorgio platform to build a next-generation Challenger and Charger. He hinted at a "significant upgrade" to the current aging platform architecture.

The latest Allpar report highlights a fresh rumor pointing to a Chrysler-badged crossover based on the Charger platform, in the spirit of the Dodge Magnum.

Finally, separate reports claim Chrysler's Portal concept will make its way into production as an all-electric minivan as early as 2020 or 2021. Marchionne highlighted the Portal as the company's vision for the "future of family transportation."
