Spied: 2020 Ford Escapeby Drew Johnson
The next Escape will borrow styling cues from the Focus Active.
Ford's next-generation Escape compact crossover has been spotted undergoing shakedown testing with minimal camouflage. As with the current Escape, the next-generation model, due out for the 2020 model year, will be sold in Europe as the Kuga.
The front end of the 2020 Escape will closely mirror that of the recently unveiled Focus Active. Like the Focus Active, the 2020 Escape sports expressive headlights, a prominent trapezoidal grille and a Ford bade that will be place prominently on the car's nose.
The Escape also shares some of the Focus Active's design cues along its flanks and at the rear. However, the Escape has a taller roofline that isn't as sharply raked at the rear. The Escape also has a rear pillar that cuts toward the rear of the vehicle instead of back toward the front.
The rear of the 2020 Escape feature a roof line spoiler, wraparound taillights and dual exhaust outlets.
A 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder is expected to be the volume engine for the 2020 Escape. A 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder will be reserved for higher-end models. Both engines will be mated to a nine-speed auto, and buyers will have the choice of front or all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid variant of the new Escape could be in the works.
It's unlikely that we'll see the 2020 Escape at the upcoming Detroit auto show, but the small SUV will make an appearance before the end of the year.
