The new F-150 is more powerful and more fuel efficient.
Ford has released full details for its updated 2018 F-150 pickup truck. The new truck ushers in updated styling and a host of powertrain upgrades.
Having debuted just three-years ago, styling changes are minor and include only slight alterations to the truck's front grille and headlights. However, beneath that new front end reside some more significant changes.
The base engine in the 2018 F-150 is a new 3.3L direct-injection V6, replacing last year's 3.5L V6. Despite being slightly smaller, horsepower is up 8 to 290 while torque has grown from 253 lb-ft to 265 lb-ft. Fuel economy has improved to 22mpg combined in 4x2 trucks and to 20mpg in 4x4 models.
Horsepower for the step-up 2.7L EcoBoost is unchanged at 325, but Ford has managed to eek out an addition 25 lb-ft of torque for a total rating for 400 lb-ft. Paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission, the 2.7L is rated at 20/26/22mpg city/highway/combined in 4x2 guise and 19/24/21mpg city/highway/combined in 4x4 form.
The F-150's 5.0L V8 gains direct injection and spray-on bore liner technology from the Shelby GT350 Mustang for the 2018 model year, bringing output to 395 horsepower (+10) and 400 lb-ft of torque (+13). Also benefiting from Ford's new 10-speed, the V8's fuel economy numbers have been improved to 17/23/19 city/highway/combined in 4x2 applications and 16/22/18mpg for 4x4s.
F-150 3.5L EcoBoost models carryover unchanged for 2018.
The big news for the new F-150 is the addition of a new 3.0L turbodiesel V6. Ford is keeping quiet on the details of that engine, but previous reports have pegged it as the same diesel engine used by Land Rover. That should net around 254 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. The diesel will also use Ford's 10-speed auto.
Other enhancements for the 2018 F-150 range include available Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality and a 4G LTE modem with WiFi connectivity for up to 10 devices.
Gas versions of the 2018 Ford F-150 are available now with prices starting from $27,425. The 3.0L diesel will be available next spring.
