2018 Ford F-150 receives Top Safety Pick; headlights disappoint
The 2018 model year adds an optional automatic emergency braking system that received a \'superior\' rating.
The Ford F-150 has retained its Top Safety Pick rating for the 2018 model year, thanks to a new automatic emergency braking (AEB) system.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tightened its Top Safety Pick qualifications for 2017, requiring vehicles to upgrade from 'basic' front crash prevention to 'advanced-' or 'superior-' rated systems.
The latest F-150 completely avoided a collision at 12 mph and 25 mph, earning the top 'superior' rating.
The pickup would have joined the Top Safety Pick+ club, however its headlights are among the worst in the segment. All three headlight trims, ranging from the base model to the expensive Platinum package and Raptor edition, received a 'poor' rating for inadequate illumination and excessive glare.
The Honda Ridgeline is currently the only large pickup with a TSP+ award.
