Ford Bronco to offer manual gearbox, 33-inch tires?
Patent applications have hinted at removable doors and a stowable roof.
The revived Ford Bronco may be available with a manual transmission and 33-inch off-road tires on 17-inch wheels, according to a recent rumor.
TFLcar's sources gleaned the details from a local dealer, so the information may not prove accurate. It does mesh with expectations that Ford is attempting to position the Bronco as a true rival to the popular Jeep Wrangler, however.
The SUV is expected to feature a modern yet retro interpretation of the original Bronco's characteristic boxy shape and overall rugged looks, with two body lengths that will compete with the two- and four-door Wrangler.
Patent filings suggest engineers and designers have envisioned a few other Wrangler-like features including removable doors and a stowable top, though it is unclear if the technology will make it to the production edition.
Ford president Jim Farley boldly declared the new Bronco will allow the company to "regain our rightful place as the off-road vehicle leader." The Blue Oval faces pressure to knock the ball out of the park with the Bronco, as the F-150 Raptor faces increasing competition from the expected Hellcat-powered Ram 1500 Rebel TRX and Chevrolet Silverado ZRX.
