Ford reveals new Everest SUV at Beijing event

The Everest shares its body-on-frame construction with the Ranger pickup.

Ford has fully revealed its new Everest SUV at at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Beijing. Based on the mid-size Ranger pickup, the Everest is aimed at the Nissan Pathfinder and the Holden Colorado.

The company's design team fitted the Everest's front end with a trapezoidal radiator grille and angular head lamps in order to differentiate it from its Ranger sibling. The SUV boasts a rugged appearance thanks to pronounced wheel arches and nearly nine inches of ground clearance, and body-on-frame construction helps ensure the truck is as capable off-road as it looks.

The SUV offers room for up to seven passengers spread out over three rows of seats. The second and third rows can be folded flat to maximize cargo space underneath the optional panoramic moonroof. Most versions will be available with Ford's Sync 2 infotainment system, presented on an eight-inch touchscreen.

Engine options include a 2.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline powerplant, or a choice between the latest four-cylinder 2.2-liter or five-cylinder 3.2-liter Duratorq TDCi diesel mills. Both six-speed automatic and manual gearboxes are offered, along with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations.

The Everest will be built alongside the Ranger in Thailand and sold in several markets in the Asia-Pacific region, but Ford is not planning on offering the SUV in the United States or in Europe.
