Ford teases all-electric Mustang-inspired SUV
The electric Mustang utility vehicle will debut by 2022.
Ford's Team Edition electric vehicle skunk works division has revealed that one of the 16 fully electric vehicles it's currently working on includes a battery-powered SUV inspired by the Mustang.
That revelation was made by Darren Palmer, Ford Team Edison Global Product Development Director, in an article for Medium. Palmer didn't give any details on the Mustang-inspired electric SUV, but Ford did release a teaser sketch of the upcoming vehicle.
The vehicle depicted in the teaser image features signature Mustang vertical taillights, along with an overall rear-end design that's very similar to the iconic pony car. Although difficult to tell given the angle, it also appears as thought the electric utility will have a fast-back roofline.
This is Palmer's first stint as the head of an electric car division, but he should have the necessary background to pull off the electric Mustang SUV. Palmer recently oversaw the development of the next-generation Mustang and currently drives a Shelby GT350R.
No word on when the Mustang-inspired electric will hit showrooms, but Ford hopes to complete its initial rollout of electric vehicles by 2022.
