Honda preparing to build Civic hatchback in US?

A next-generation model could be ready by 2021.

After confirming plans to close its factory in the UK, Honda is reportedly considering shifting Civic hatchback production to the US.

Honda told Autoblog that nearly 20 percent of North American Civic sales are the hatchback edition, representing a larger share than the company had expected.

The hatchback's surprising popularity among Americans has inspired the Japanese automaker to explore the possibility of manufacturing the hatchback in the US, presumably including the flagship Type R edition.

The Swindon, UK, plant is not scheduled to close until 2021, hinting at a potential time-frame for opening or expanding a US factory to accommodate the next-gen Civic hatchback.
