Hyundai readying new crossover to slot below Kona in US market

The new model is expected to be unveiled in New York.

Hyundai is apparently planning to launch a new small crossover in the US market.

The A-segment crossover will slot below the larger Kona (pictured), with more traditional styling, Hyundai global design center head SangYup Lee told MotorTrend in a recent interview.

"It's smaller and it's distinctively different than Kona," he added."So imagine Kona as a really fast profile, distinctive, iconic character to it, but this one is almost very boxy, bold, bull-doggy character."

Adding a new entry-level crossover could help Hyundai reinvigorate sales in the US. The company set an all-time SUV sales record with more than 300,000 units last year, up 24 percent over 2017.

The smaller mystery model is said to be on track to debut in New York and land in showrooms before the end of the year.
