Hyundai recalls 2011 Sonata to fix steering defect
The campaign is one of several recent programs to fix problematic electric power steering (EPS) systems.
Hyundai is the latest automaker to issue a recall for a problematic electric power steering (EPS) system, used in the 2011 Sonata.
The subject Sonata's EPS circuit board is prone to damage, sometimes resulting in loss of power-steering assist. Illumination of the EPS warning light serves as a failure warning to drivers.
"With a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash," the recall documents warn.
The company has been investigating related warranty claims for more than a year, eventually tracing the problems to a supplier manufacturing change involving the circuit board's protective coating.
Similar EPS recalls, for various specific reasons, have been launched by FCA, General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Mazda and other automakers.
