Hyundai Sonata gets dynamic bending lights, lower price for 2017

The 2016 Sonata had received a \'poor\' rating in IIHS headlight tests.

Hyundai has revised the 2017 Sonata with new available technology and a lower base price.

The sedan can now be purchased with dynamic bending lights, helping improve illumination while traveling through a corner. The upgraded headlights are only available on the Limited trim levels.

The 2016 Sonata earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, however it will eventually be disqualified if its headlights are not improved.

The Sonata was listed among nine models to receive a 'poor' rating in the institute's new headlight tests. Notably, the sedan received the worst ranking due to excessive glare, rather than insufficient illumination, though its high-beam performance was also deemed 'inadequate.'

It is unclear if the dynamic bending lights will resolve the performance issues highlighted in the IIHS report.

The 2017 Sonata is due to arrive in showrooms, with prices now starting at $22,435 -- $150 less than last year. Hyundai claims the adjustment makes it the most affordable midsize sedan.
