Geneva LIVE: Jeep gives Renegade, Compass the plug-in hybrid treatment

The new models promise to be more efficient and better off-road.

Jeep has officially given its Renegade and Compass small SUVs the plug-in hybrid treatment at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The duo represents the Jeep brand's first foray into the world of plug-in hybridization.

Both Jeep models will share the same basic powertrain -- a 1.3L turbocharged gas engine to power the front wheels and an electric motor to power the wheels at the back. Total output for the plug-in system is up to 240 horsepower, resulting in snappy performance. Jeep says the Renegade will be able to scoot from 0-60 in about 7 seconds. Performance figures aren't yet available for the plug-in Compass, but Jeep says the plug-in hybird will be the fastest version of the nameplate.

Of course efficiency is also a big part of the plug-in story. Both models will be able to cover 31 miles on electric power alone. Top speed in EV mode is a useful 80mph. CO2 emissions are said to be lower than 50g/km.

Jeep promises the plug-in treatment won't water down the brand's go-anywhere reputation. In fact, Jeep says the hybrid drivetrain will actually improve the Renegade and Compass' off-road prowess thanks to the low down torque of the electric motor. And since the eAWD system isn't mechanically linked, Jeep says the plug-in drivetrain can more effectively transfer torque to the wheels that need it.

Changes to the rest of the vehicle are minimal. Plug-in Renegade and Compass models receive a few exterior badges to differentiate them from their standard counterparts. The PHEV models have also been upgraded with a dedicated instrument cluster and an infotainment screen.

Jeep has not announced when its new PHEV models will go on sale.
