Lamborghini considering aero-focused limited-edition hypercar

Lamborghini doesn't want Aston Martin to hog the spotlight.

Lamborghini doesn't like the idea of letting the upcoming Aston Martin Valkyrie go unchecked. Stefano Domenicali, the company's chief executive, has confirmed his team is seriously considering launching a limited-edition hypercar developed with a focus on aerodynamics. The project hasn't received the proverbial green light yet.

The yet-unnamed model would be an "extreme aero" car. Domenicali envisions it "in the vein of the Centenario and Veneno," according to British magazine Autocar. His statement hints that Lamborghini's answer to the Valkyrie will be designed to meet a certain performance goal, not to fall under a pre-determined price point.

Autocar believes the model will receive an evolution of the advanced aerodynamics package that equips the recently-introduced Aventador SVJ (pictured). It will use a naturally-aspirated V12 engine but it might receive an electric motor in order to increase power and performance without boosting exhaust emissions. The powertrain would likely serve as an accurate preview of the one that will power the Aventador's successor; Lamborghini has already confirmed the car will go hybrid.

There's no word yet on when Lamborghini will decide whether to move forward with the project, let alone when the model will make its debut if it's approved for production. Another point that's up in the air is pricing. It could cost about $1 million, like the McLaren Senna, or it could arrive as a much more expensive model with a price tag in the $2 to $3 million range.
