Lamborghini Urus to begin production in 2017

The next Rambo Lambo will arrive sometime in 2017.

Lamborghini's upcoming Urus SUV will make production in three years, the company's Chief Executive Officer has revealed.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Bloomberg on the sidelines of the Detroit auto show that "the expectation” is to begin production of an SUV based on the Urus concept in 2017.

"The luxury SUV market is poised to continue to grow,” he added.

Set to be Lamborghini's first SUV model since the LM002 went out of production in 1993, the production version of the Urus will combine Lambo's supercar styling with the added utility of a higher ride height. That extra ground clearance is expected to make the Urus particularly desirable in emerging markets where road surfaces aren't always suitable for Lamborghini's low-riding cars.

The Urus should also help Lamborghini's sales in the United States where SUVs controlled 30.9 percent of the market in 2013, up from 29.7 percent a year earlier.

It remains to be seen what powertrain Lamborghini will slip between the fenders of the Urus, but a gas V10 is believed to be the frontrunner.
