2016 Lincoln MKS scooped

Lincoln in putting the finishing touches on its next MKS sedan.

New details have emerged on Lincoln's next-generation MKS sedan. Set to retain its position as Lincoln's flagship, the MKS will be the first vehicle to be penned under the design direction of former Cadillac stylist Max Wolff.

Although the Lincoln MKZ took a bold step down a more radical design path, the next-generation MKS won't be following it. Instead, look for the new MKS to sport a softer and more toned down design theme, with some cues harkening back to the brand's glory days.

The next MKS will continue to borrow a platform from the lesser Ford Taurus, but the big four-door will gain a new entry-level engine - a 2.9L EcoBoost V6 codenamed Nano. According to Car and Driver, the new 2.9L should be good for about 300 horsepower.

Of course the MKS' 3.5L EcoBoost will also be on offer, but power should increase over today's 365 ponies. The 2.9L will be available in front- and all-wheel drive configurations, while the 3.5L will be offered exclusively with AWD.

A six-speed automatic will initially handle shifting duties, but it will eventually be replaced by a nine-speed auto.

The new Lincoln MKS is expected to land in dealer showrooms in late 2015 as a 2016 model year vehicle.
