2019 Mazda6 joins Top Safety Pick club

Headlight performance was not good enough to qualify for the Top Safety Pick Plus award.

The 2019 Mazda6 has earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The sedan aced all of the IIHS crashworthiness evaluations and features standard 'superior'-rated front crash prevention technology, avoiding collision at 12 mph and reducing its speed by 24 mph in the 25 mph test.

The Mazda6's base LED projector headlights were deemed 'marginal' due to inadequate visibility in several scenarios, while the optional curve-adaptive LEDs earned an 'acceptable' rating.

Without any available 'good' headlights, the sedan missed out on the Top Safety Pick Plus award.

The Mazda6 joins five other Mazda models with IIHS awards, including the CX-5 which is the company's only model to earn a TSP+ rating so far this year.
