Mazda's on-again, off-again diesel offensive is back on track.

Unfazed by the Dieselgate affair, the Japanese firm will offer the brand new CX-5 (pictured) with a turbodiesel engine starting in the second half of next year. Mazda has sold plenty of diesel-powered cars in the past, but it's never launched an oil-burning passenger car on our shores before.

The unit in question is a 2.2-liter four-cylinder that's already available in a handful of global markets including Europe and Australia. Down under, the 2.2-liter generates 172 horsepower at 4,500 rpm and 309 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. Technical specifications for the U.S.-spec model haven't been published yet, though they should remain fairly close to what the rest of the world gets.

Buyers in Europe will be asked to choose between a six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic, but it's too early to tell whether or not the stick will be offered on our shores. Front-wheel drive will come standard, and all-wheel drive will most likely be offered at an extra cost.

What's next?

The CX-5 is expected to kick off Mazda's long-awaited diesel offensive. If the crossover is well received by American buyers, the 2.2-liter diesel mill will undoubtedly find its way under the hood of other models such as the Mazda6.
