McLaren reveals Speedtail with 1,035 horsepower, 250 mph top speedby Justin King
The car can launch to 186 mph in just 12.8 seconds.
McLaren has finally revealed the Speedtail, billed as the company's first 'Hyper-GT' and its fastest car ever.
The sleek coupe features a teardrop-shaped cockpit and elongated 16.9-foot carbon fiber body. It is the company's most aerodynamically efficient road car, with active rear ailerons and retractable rear-view cameras.
Like the P1, the Speedtail is powered by a gasoline-electric hybrid system that delivers a combined 1,035 horsepower. Drivers can expect to launch from zero to 186 mph in just 12.8 seconds and eventually top out at 250 mph.
The car is the first modern McLaren to surpass the top speed of the iconic McLaren F1 that ended production two decades ago. Both share a unique center driver position flanked by a pair of passenger seats to the rear.
"McLaren has never built a vehicle like the Speedtail before," says McLaren chief Mike Flewitt. "As our first 'Hyper-GT', the Speedtail is the ultimate McLaren road car; a fusion of art and science that combines an astonishing maximum speed with an iconic central-driving position and a truly pioneering approach to bespoke personalization."
All 106 units have been sold ahead of the public unveiling, each fetching at least $2.2 million USD before adding 'boundless' customization options.
