Mercedes-AMG shows GLE 53 with 48V hybrid tech, 450 hp

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the GLE 53, a high-performance package with unique AMG styling.

The crossover is powered by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with turbocharging and an electric auxiliary compressor tied to a 48-volt hybrid system. The gasoline mill provides 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, while the EQ Boost starter-generator adds an extra 21 ponies and 184 pound-feet of torque.

Drivers can expect to hit 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds, with help from 4Matic+ fully variable all-wheel drive.

The AMG-tuned GLE boasts active ride control with pneumatic self-leveling suspension that drops 15mm in sport modes or raises up to 55mm to increase ground clearance on poor road surfaces. The crossover is also equipped with larger brakes and an AMG-specific steering system.

The exterior is visually distinguished by an AMG grille with 15 vertical chrome slats. Unique 20-inch wheels and a rear chrome diffuser further reinforce the sporty look.

The GLE 53 is scheduled to arrive in US showrooms by late 2020.
