Mercedes-Benz sells out of EQC for 2019

The company does not expect to be able to keep up with demand until after 2021 or later.

Mercedes-Benz has apparently sold out of its first EQC production run through the end of the year.

The all-electric SUV was available for pre-order since last year, though it will not begin rolling off the assembly line until later in 2019.

"We are sure that we will not be able to meet the demand in 2019 and probably not by 2020," CEO Dieter Zetsche said recently, as quoted by Welt. "But we do everything we can to achieve the maximum capacity."

The German automaker has not said how many units will be built in 2019 or 2020, leaving some uncertainty surrounding the claim of strong demand.

The company hopes to have no less than 10 electric vehicles in its portfolio by 2022, suggesting development of multiple EVs is currently progressing at a fast clip.

"One year or two, I think we have set the course for full power," Zetsche added.
