Daimler denies helping Kim Jong Un buy embargoed Maybachs

The luxury armored limousines were brought to summits with Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Daimler has denied any direct involvement in sending Maybach limousines to North Korea leader Kim Jong Un.

Associated Press questioned the company for a report detailing how Kim Jong Un continues to "travel in style" despite UN sanctions that bar companies from selling luxury goods to North Korea.

The North Korean leader is said to use at least two Maybach limousines, including an S62 and a S600 Pullman Guard, when attending foreign summits. Recently, the limos appeared in Russia for his high-profile meeting with President Vladimir Putin.

"We have absolutely no idea how those vehicles were delivered to North Korea," a Daimler spokesperson said in a statement. "For Daimler, the correct export of products in conformance with the law is a fundamental principle of responsible entrepreneurial activity."

The company noted that sales by third parties, "especially of used vehicles," are beyond its control and responsibility.

While it may be relatively simple to prevent UN countries from importing North Korean goods, a ban on exports to the country appears to be more of a symbolic gesture that is presumably easy to circumvent.
