Mercedes-Maybach to show concept in Pebble Beach
The design study could preview Maybach\'s answer to the Rolls-Royce Dawn.
Mercedes-Benz design boss Gordon Wagener has announced Maybach will show a surprise later this month at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
The designer posted a short teaser video on his personal Instagram account that shows miscellaneous sketches of the Concept IAA from 2015 and the Maybach 6 concept (pictured) introduced last year. The upcoming Pebble Beach concept isn't shown in full, but the video suggests it will borrow styling cues from the two aforementioned concepts.

British magazine Autocar has learned the "big surprise" previewed by the video is actually a convertible version of the 6 concept, which previewed Maybach's answer to the Rolls-Royce Wraith. Last year's show car used a 738-horsepower battery-electric powertrain.
Far from a simple design study, the 6 is expected to make the transition from the show floor to the showroom floor in the coming years. It will likely launch with a powerful V12 engine, but an electric powertrain might join the lineup a little later in the production run. Interestingly, Autocar reports the coupe/convertible duo will be built in a new standalone factory so that customers can get involved in the production process.
The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance starts on August 17. Mercedes-Benz will likely release additional teaser material in the coming days.
