Revealed: Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabrioletby Byron Hurd
Mercedes-Benz brings yet another Maybach to Pebble Beach.
Mercedes-Benz has arrived in Monterey with a drop-top version of the Mercedes-Maybach Concept 6 which it debuted at Pebble Beach last year. Mercedes-Benz has been dropping hints about its Pebble Beach debut for a week, but now we can finally feast our eyes on the real deal.
Enter the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet. The specs are nothing surprising, as Mercedes-Benz outlined its vision (unavoidable) for an all-electric alternative to the Rolls-Royce Wraith a year ago when it debuted the fixed-roof concept.
"The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is a car which, with its sensual, emotionally appealing design and innovative technical concept solutions, defines the ultimate in luxury of the future," Mercedes-Benz said in the announcement. "At the same time the two-seater model pays homage to the glorious 'automotive haute couture' of hand-finished, exclusive cabriolets."
Like the original, the Cabriolet boasts a 738-horsepower electric drive system which, Mercedes claims, is good for 200 miles of range. All of this is hypothetical, of course, as this Art Deco design masterpiece is, for the time being anyway, still no more than a concept.
"The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet takes modern luxury into the realms of the ultimate in luxury, and is the perfect embodiment of our design strategy. Breathtaking proportions combined with a luxurious 'haute couture' interior help to create the ultimate experience," explains Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG.
Those numbers don't seem that far-fetched as concept cars go, however, so the real deal isn't completely out of the question, especially now that the luxury automakers are getting frisky about taking the electric-vehicle fight to Tesla in the higher-end market, rather than producing lip-service EVs for mainstream buyers who simply aren't interested.
