Next MINI JCW to pack 230 horsepower?

Rumors indicate the next MINI JCW will pack a 2.0-liter turbo four.

A report coming out of England indicates the next MINI Hardtop John Cooper Works will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at about 230 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque.

If the rumored figures are accurate, the 2.0-liter turbo four will produce 16 more ponies and 52 more lb-ft. than the 1.6-liter found under the hood of the last Hardtop JCW. The extra grunt will enable the hot hatch to reach 62 mph from a stop in about six seconds and go on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph.

A lowered and stiffened suspension will work with upgraded Brembo brakes on all four corners to keep the cavalry in check.

Visually, the next MINI JCW will be similar to the thinly-veiled John Cooper Works concept (pictured) that was presented last January at the Detroit Motor Show. The performance-focused MINI will stand out from its regular-production counterpart thanks to a full body kit that will include side skirts and a spoiler, large multi-spoke alloy wheels, plastic mesh-like inserts in the radiator grille and model-specific emblems all around.

The MINI Hardtop John Cooper Works and its five-door counterpart will be unveiled at next year's Detroit Motor Show and go on sale across the nation in the spring of 2015.
