Mitsubishi Evo to be replaced ''in spirit'' by high-performance SUV
New model will integrate tech from MiEV Evolution electric Pikes Peak race car.
Mitsubishi has dropped another hint that the Lancer Evolution's successor will take on the form of an SUV rather than a traditional sedan or coupe.
Speaking at the Paris show, Mitsubishi product head Kanenori Okamoto warned that a future high-performance flagship won't be arriving as a direct descendant of the Evo X.
"It will be replaced in spirit by an SUV with high performance," he noted, as quoted by Autocar.
The executive points to the company's Pikes Peak electric record holder, the MiEV Evolution, as a source of powertrain technology. The new model is likely to get a plug-in hybrid system that takes advantage of the S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.
The company has already crafted a virtual representation of one such vehicle, the XR-PHEV concept, though there has been no public mention of bringing the idea beyond the world of Gran Turismo 6.
