Report: Mitsubishi to widen gap between crossovers, launch Outlander Sport-size EV

The Outlander is expected grow in size, while the next-gen Outlander Sport will shrink.

Mitsubishi is reportedly preparing to revamp its crossover lineup to widen the gap between each model.

Mimicking alliance partner Nissan's positioning of the Pathfinder, Rogue and Kicks, Mitsibushi is expected to resize its high-riding models to achieve at least eight inches of length difference between each model.

"Today we aren't in an ideal position, with our SUVs close in size, but in the next 18 months you will start to see a strategy that separates them out," an unnamed insider told Autocar.

The Outlander is expected to become slightly longer, while the Outlander Sport will shrink. The source also suggested the latter model will receive an all-electric variant.

The new strategy is expected to be active by 2020, though it will presumably take longer for the lineup to be fully refreshed to reflect the large size gaps.
