New Nissan Z arriving next year with up to 475 hp?
The next Z car will allegedly share its platform with the next-gen Infiniti Q60.
The numerous rumors surrounding the Nissan Z's death were greatly exaggerated, according to a recent report. The coupe will allegedly return for a new generation in the coming years, and it will spawn a hot-rodded, Nismo-badged flagship model.
British magazine Autocar learned from insiders that Nissan has given the next-generation Z (potentially dubbed 400Z) the proverbial green light for production. Called Z35 internally, it will share its rear-wheel drive platform, numerous mechanical components, and its electrical architecture with the next Infiniti Q60. Switching to the Q60's platform will make the upcoming Z bigger than the current model (pictured).
The flagship of the Z line will be a Nismo-tuned model with a 475-horsepower evolution of the standard car's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. Four-wheel drive will come standard. Non-Nismo models will boast 400 horsepower and rear-wheel drive.
Autocar adds we'll get an early glimpse of the next-generation Nissan Z before the end of the year. The production model will arrive about a year later, meaning it won't go on sale until the 2020 model year. The Roadster variant will follow about a year after the coupe arrives.
Nissan hasn't commented on the report so we're taking it with a grain of salt. On one hand, it's difficult for the company to make a business case for a coupe because the segment is in the midst of collapse. On the other hand, the Z remains one of Nissan's image-boosting models and company insiders badly want to see it stick around for a new generation.
