Next Nissan Titan to get Cummins turbodiesel V8

The optional Cummins V8 will boast roughly 550 lb-ft of torque.

Nissan has announced that the next-generation Titan will offer something for which light-duty pickup buyers have been clamoring for ages: a big, torquey diesel V8.

The Japanese automaker has turned to Cummins to supply the new Titan with an optional 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 that's expected to churn out more than 300 horsepower along with roughly 550 lb-ft of torque.

Those figures compare with the 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft produced by the only comparable pickup on the market, the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6-equipped Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which will likely hold an efficiency advantage over the Titan.

The Titan's diesel V8 will be built at the Cummins Columbus Engine Plant in Indiana, and Nissan says that the Titan will continue to be built at its Canton, Mississippi, factory.

"Truck owners told us there's a demand for the performance and torque of a diesel in a capable truck that doesn't require the jump up to a heavy-duty commercial pickup," said Nissan Sales & Marketing divisional vice president Fred Diaz, who previously led Chrysler's Ram truck brand.

"There is no question that the new Titan will turn heads, and with the available Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel, we expect to win new fans and attract buyers looking for this unique configuration."

Along with the new diesel mill, the redesigned Titan will launch with a much wider range of trim levels and bodystyles than the current pickup, which has languished without the options to compete with domestic trucks since its introduction in 2003. A regular cab model and lower-priced trims will be on offer, and an entry-level V6 has also been rumored.

The next Titan is expected to debut as a 2015 model.
