Porsche confirms Macan EV

Production will begin "early in the next decade."

Confirming recent rumors, Porsche has announced that the next-generation Macan will be fully electric.

The announcement of Porsche's third EV has arrived before the company has begun shipping its first all-electric model, the Taycan, which is due to land later this year.

"Electromobility and Porsche go together perfectly; not just because they share a high-efficiency approach, but especially because of their sporty character," says CEO Oliver Blume. "By 2022 we will be investing more than six billion euros in electric mobility, and by 2025 50 percent of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system."

The Macan EV will be built on Volkswagen Group's Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, co-developed by Porsche and Audi. It will be built on the same production line that currently builds the gasoline- and diesel-powered Macan.

Porsche says the electric crossover is targeted to arrive "early in the next decade." Unofficial reports point to 2022 as the most likely arrival window.
