2019-2020 Ram 1500 first full-size pickup to earn Top Safety Pick Plus

The truck initially missed out on the top award until FCA revised its headlight design.

The 2019-2020 Ram 1500 is the first full-size pickup to earn a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The truck had already been evaluated and was not eligible for the 'Plus' award due to 'poor'- and 'marginal'-rated headlights.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles apparently went back to the drawing board and designed new headlights that were quickly put into production. Vehicles built after May 2019 are available with 'good'-rated LED projectors.
The base model's halogen reflector headlights and optional LED reflector headlights are still rated 'marginal.'
The latest production trucks also benefit from optional front-crash prevention technology, which received a 'superior' rating.
The rival 2019 Ford F-150 Crew Cab and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab have not received any current IIHS safety awards. Both are only available with 'poor' headlights, while the Silverado received a 'marginal' rating in the passenger-side small overlap crash.
