Tesla Model 3 earns Top Safety Pick Plus award
Tests indicated a potential risk of injury to the lower leg in a small-overlap crash.
The Tesla Model 3 has joined the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick Plus ranks.
The all-electric sedan earned top marks across the board in all crash tests, along with the automatic emergency braking assessment and headlight evaluation.
The IIHS did observe door hinge pillar intrusion in the small-overlap crash, with a moderate risk of injury to the left lower leg.
"No other injury risk was recorded, and the front and side airbags and the seat belt worked well to control the dummy's movement during the crash," the IIHS report noted.
The Model 3 joins the Audi e-tron in the TSP+ ranks. The IIHS also tested the Chevrolet Bolt, which fell short of the top award due to 'poor' headlight performance and an 'acceptable' rating in the passenger-side small-overlap test.
