Tesla Model S to get 50 extra HP via software update
Elon Musk promises the extra oomph will allow the car to have a wider advantage over the Porsche Taycan.
The Tesla Model S is apparently due for a significant horsepower increase, which will be rolled out to many existing cars via an over-the-air update.
CEO Elon Musk recently disclosed plans to increase power across the company's entire fleet, noting that the Model 3 would gain around five percent and the Model S/X would get approximately three percent.Musk has now announced a much bigger jump of 50 horsepower for the Model S, increasing peak output by 50 horsepower.
The comments were related to a recent Top Gear drag race that declared the Porsche Taycan the winner with a 10.69-second run at 131.6 mph, versus 11.08 seconds at 124 mph for the Model S. DragTimes analyzed the results and claimed Top Gear may have used old numbers for the Model S that do not reflect the current production model, which has frequently achieved faster quarter-mile runs than the car allegedly ran during the Taycan shootout.
"DragTimes analysis is correct," Musk wrote on Twitter. "Also, there's a software upgrade for Model S coming out that increases peak power by 50HP, so Model S should beat Porsche Taycan Turbo S by a wider margin in 0 to 60 & 1/4 mile races."
