Tesla holiday OTA update to include Full Self Driving 'sneak preview'
The software also includes a few new infotainment games.
Tesla is apparently planning to roll out a 'holiday software update' that will move Autopilot closer to its promised Full Self Driving capability.
Elon Musk announced the over-the-air updated on Twitter, noting that it will include a "FSD sneak preview" along with a few new infotainment games including Stardew Valley and Backgammon.
The executive did not explain exactly what the self-driving preview is capable of, though he previously indicated plans to launch more FSD capabilities for owners enrolled in the beta program.
All companies pursuing fully autonomous driving have apparently struggled to bring the technology across the finish line. Tesla is no exception, prompting the company to change tack and initially roll out "full self driving" while requiring the driver to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Such a system would not technically achieve Level 4 or Level 5 autonomy, instead giving Tesla a chance to test and validate its higher-level technology in the real world as a Level 3 platform until gathering enough data to demonstrate that human attention is no longer constantly required.
The automaker has not yet announced a time frame for launching the holiday software update, which will presumably require the latest Autopilot hardware to enable the FSD preview.
