Tesla to form Chinese design team for 'original' model
The car will be designed for China but sold globally.
Tesla is apparently planning to develop a China-specific model to join the Model S, X, 3 and Y.
The plan was announced by Elon Musk at the company's event celebrating the first Model 3 deliveries from the Shanghai Gigafactory, which will also build the Model Y.
The California-based automaker will establish a design center in China to create an "original car" that will be sold in the world's largest automotive market and abroad.
"I think China has some of the best art in the world," he said. "And I think it's something that would be appreciated on a worldwide basis."
Likely emboldened by strong demand for the boldly styled Cybertruck, Tesla may be planning to give its Chinese designers broad flexibility in creating a visually distinctive model. The company is still working to bring its pickup, semi and next-gen Roadster to market, however, so the project may not be an immediate priority.
