Texas proposes bill to ban Tesla from servicing cars in the state

by Justin King

Dealer lobbyists are pushing for new laws that would make it even harder for Tesla to do business in the state.

The Texas legislature is reportedly considering a bill that would effectively ban Tesla from servicing its own vehicles in the state.

The company is already barred from selling cars directly to consumers in Texas. Archaic dealer franchise laws prohibit automakers from direct sales, even if they don't have any franchisees with which to compete.

The Texas dealer lobby is said to wield significant power over state legislators, increasing the chances that SB 1415 will pass, according to International Business Times.

Tesla has established showrooms in Texas, however staff are not allowed to talk about purchasing or pricing. Buyers can check out cars in person, then order online for delivery from California.
