Video shows Tesla Model S burst into flames in Shanghai parking garage

Tesla has sent a team to investigate the incident.

Tesla is investigating an apparent Model S battery fire that was captured by a security camera inside a parking garage in Shanghai.

The viral video appears to show gases escaping from the battery module before it bursts into flames, shooting fire out from beneath the front and sides of the vehicle.

"After learning about the incident in Shanghai, we dispatched a team to the scene last night as soon as possible," Tesla wrote in a statement on the Chinese social media site Weibo. "We are actively liaising with the relevant departments and cooperating with the verification of the situation. According to the current information, there were no casualties."

A few Tesla vehicles previously burst into flames hours after the battery module was punctured, sometimes due to a collision with road debris that left no visible damage to the exterior, though the details of the Shanghai fire remain unclear.
