Chicago LIVE: 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off Road
For 2020, the Toyota RAV4 is getting a little more off-roady.
Toyota has introduced a new TRD Off Road trim package for its compact RAV4 SUV at the 2019 Chicago auto show. Though not a full on TRD Pro model, the new package promises to make the RAV4 more capable off the beaten path.
The RAV4 TRD Off Road is based on the RAV4 Adventure model and includes a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system as standard. The system can not only send up to 50 percent of the engine's power to the rear wheels, but can also shift torque to either the left or right rear wheels to enhance performance and traction.
Like the standard RAV4, the new TRD Off Road model includes a Multi-Terrain Select with varying modes for different surfaces. The RAV4 TRD Off Road further benefits from Hill Start Assist Control, Trailer Sway Control and Downhill Assist Control.
On the hardware front the RAV4 TRD Off Road has been upgraded with twin-tube shocks that have been re-valved and fitted with new rebound springs for better off-road performance. Toyota has also updated the vehicle's bump stops.
2020 Toyota RAV4 Off Road models will roll on unique 18-wheels wrapped in aggressive Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail all-terrain tires. In addition to being more adept at off-roading, the Wildpeak tires are also Severe Snow Rated.
Most of the TRD Off Road's styling is borrowed from the RAV4 Adventure. An exclusive exterior color is, however, available for the RAV4 TRD Off Road -- two-tone Magnetic Gray Metallic w/Ice Edge Roof. Midnight Black, Lunar Rock, Ruby Flare Pearl and Super White exterior colors will also be available.
The RAV4 TRD Off Road's engine is untouched; it remains a 2.5L four-cylinder rated at 203 horsepower.
The 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off Road is scheduled to go on sale this fall. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle's market launch.
