Toyota builds electric shuttle for Tokyo Olympics

The company may have fallen behind in its plan to showcase its autonomous tech at the 2020 Games.

Toyota has revealed a the Accessible People Mover, a 'mobility' shuttle designed specifically for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The all-electric people mover will seat just five passengers and a driver, traveling up to 62 miles on a single charge at speeds of up to 12 mph.

The company has designed several different configurations, including one that accommodates a stretcher and another that has an integrated wheelchair ramp.

A 2017 report suggested Toyota had intended to showcase its automated driving technology at the 2020 Games. The company appears to be backing off from that goal, however, as the technology has taken longer than expected to develop, though it is possible that semi-autonomous demonstration vehicles could still be used in a limited capacity.
