Toyota patent drawings hint at new coupe
The company has not yet revealed the final model in its "three brothers" sports car strategy.
A mystery Toyota coupe has surfaced in patent design images submitted in Japan.
The company has promised to pursue a "three brothers" sports car strategy, placing the Supra at the top of the range. The Toyota 86 has been confirmed for a second generation, while the third model remains shrouded in mystery.
Spotted by Carscoops, the patent drawings show a small coupe that has an unusual fastback profile that hints at a mid-engine configuration. The layout meshes with rumors of a revived MR2, though its apparent design language doesn't follow the Supra's more aggressive styling.
The Japanese automaker is expected to seek a development partner to help share costs for such a project, in the same spirit as the BMW collaboration that led to the Supra.
The third brother is unlikely to arrive until the early 2020s.
