Volkswagen confirms Passat GT for 2018

The Passat GT will get Volkswagen\'s 280-horsepower VR6 engine.

Volkswagen of America will soon expand the Passat lineup with a range-topping model set to wear the GT badge, according to a recent report.

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT will be similar to the Passat GT Concept (pictured) unveiled at last year's edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show. Designed in Chattanooga specifically for the North American market, the show car looked nearly ready for production.

Digital Trends has learned the GT will receive a sportier-looking body kit, a blacked-out grille, a discreet spoiler on the trunk lid, and red accents that echo the GTI. Model-specific alloy wheels will round out the visual modifications.

Power for the GT will come from Volkswagen's 3.6-liter VR6 engine. It will send at least 280 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Performance specifications haven't been released yet.

A Volkswagen representative told Digital Trends the 2018 Passat GT will go on sale early next year., and the report was later confirmed by Autoblog. Pricing information hasn't been released yet, but we expect the model will start at about $30,000.

When it goes on sale, it will compete in the same segment as the V6-powered Toyota Camry and the 325-horsepower Ford Fusion Sport.
