Volkswagen Beetle to return as an RWD electric vehicle

The company is allegedly considering reviving the iconic Beetle for the age of electricity.

Just months after announcing plans to retire the Beetle after its current generation, Volkswagen is already considering its revival in the EV era.

The automaker is apparently developing the MEB platform with a focus on versatility. The all-electric architecture will underpin the upcoming ID-badged lineup, spanning from a basic hatchback to the Microbus-inspired ID Buzz van.

Decision makers are now evaluating an electric Beetle to complement the retro ID Buzz, reimagining VW's most iconic models as the company shifts its attention away from internal combustion engines.

Speaking to Autocar, VW design head Klaus Bischoff noted that the ID hatchback and Beetle represent the shortest wheelbases envisioned for the MEB platform.

"If you ... did the Beetle on it, you have plenty of room so there's no compromise in functionality anymore," he said. "So it could be a very attractive car."

The project appears to be more of a long-term thought, waiting until VW is ready to begin filling smaller niches after rolling out the first three mainstream ID-series models.
