Volkswagen quietly retires Golf R from 2020 lineup

The next-gen Golf's American fate is still unclear.

Volkswagen has quietly removed the performance-focused Golf R from its 2020 lineup.

The retirement was first noticed by Motor Authority and later received official confirmation that the R-badged variant has reached the end of its production run for the seventh-generation Golf.

The Mk7 lineup has lost a few other configurations for the 2020 model year, leaving just the Value Edition, and Volkswagen recently announced that the SportWagen and Alltrack models would not carry over past the 2019 model year.

The standard Golf's fate in the US market is far from certain, with just the Mk8 Golf R and GTI receiving official confirmation to stay in American showrooms going forward.
