Volkswagen hints at all-electric 'rugged' SUV
Unfortunately, boxy shapes and elevated ride height have a significant impact on electric range.
Volkswagen is apparently considering a more rugged all-electric SUV to eventually join the ID sub-brand.
The company's EV concepts already include the more urban-focused ID Crozz and throwback ID Buggy open-top off-roader (pictured), highlighting the broad flexibility of the MEB electric platform architecture.
"Maybe one of the next ID family members is a more rugged thing than we have seen," VW design head Klaus Bischoff said at the recent Shanghai auto show, responding to an inquiry about a more traditional 4x4, as quoted by Autocar.
The executive cautioned that aerodynamics are a challenge with such models, losing around 37 miles of range due to a boxy shape and higher ground clearance.
