2019 Volvo XC40 earns Top Safety Pick Plus award [Video]

The new XC40 is the only Volvo with 'good'-rated headlights.

Volvo has received two IIHS safety awards, earning Top Safety Pick Plus honors for the 2019 XC40 and the lesser Top Safety Pick status for the 2019 XC60.

Both crossovers aced all of the institute's crash tests including the small- and moderate-overlap front impacts, while their 'superior'-rated front crash prevention systems come standard. The XC40 and XC60 avoided collisions at 12 mph and 25 mph.

The XC40 qualified for TSP+ thanks to its 'good' headlights, though the curve-adaptive LED reflectors are an optional upgrade with the Advanced package. The XC40's base headlights were deemed 'poor' due to excessive glare from the low beams.

The XC60 missed out on TSP+ due to its 'acceptable' curve-adaptive LED reflectors, sold as an upgrade option over the 'marginal'-rated base headlights.

The two crossovers are Volvo's first models to earn IIHS safety awards for the 2019 model year.
